Chemmen theeyal (\u0d15\u0d4a\u0d1e\u0d4d\u0d1a\u0d4d \u0d24\u0d40\u0d2f\u0d7d) is a typical shrimp preparation in mouthwatering spicy curry with richness of \u00a0roasted coconut gravy. It is a good accompaniment with rice. Preparing shrimp for this dish involves removing the head, shell, tail, and &#8220;sand vein&#8221;. \u00a0Here I present \u00a0the authentic way to make chemmeen theeyal.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Shrimp (\u0d1a\u0d46\u0d2e\u0d4d\u0d2e\u0d40\u0d7b)\u00a0-cleaned \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0: 1 kg<\/li>\n<li>Sliced onion\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 2 \u00bd cup<\/li>\n<li>Chopped tomato\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : \u00a0\u00bd<\/li>\n<li>Splitted green chilli\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : \u00a03<\/li>\n<li>Ginger garlic paste`\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 1 Tbl sp.<\/li>\n<li>Kudampuli (kokum)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 1 Small piece<\/li>\n<li>Oil\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 1 Tbl sp<\/li>\n<li>Curry leaves\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : \u00a0A few<\/li>\n<li>Salt for taste<\/li>\n<li>Water\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 2 \u00bd cup<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><em>For Masala:-<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Coconut\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 2 cup<\/li>\n<li>Pepper cone\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 2 T sp.<\/li>\n<li>Chilli powder\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : \u00a02 Tbl sp.<\/li>\n<li>Turmeric powder\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 1\/3 T sp.<\/li>\n<li>Coriander powder\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 2 T sp.<\/li>\n<li>Garlic cloves\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 : 3<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Method<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In a kadai \/ pan add the coconut and fry it in low medium heat.<\/li>\n<li>Once it is started changing the color, add the pepper cone and garlic.<\/li>\n<li>Fry it until the color became golden brown.<\/li>\n<li>Add the chilli, turmeric and coriander powder and saut\u00e9 it for avoid burning for a minute and turn off \u00a0the stove<\/li>\n<li>Take the kadai from the stove and let it cool completely.<\/li>\n<li>Put it in a mixie and make a smooth paste (you will see oil is oozing from the coconut).\u00a0Don\u2019t add water for grinding.<\/li>\n<li>In a kadai\/ earthern pot heat the oil; once the oil is hot add the onion along with ginger garlic paste and green chilli.<\/li>\n<li>Saut\u00e9 until the onion became translucent.<\/li>\n<li>Add the tomato and saut\u00e9 it for another one minute.<\/li>\n<li>Add the shrimp and mix everything well for another 2 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Add the coconut paste and\u00a0 water , let it boil.<\/li>\n<li>Once boiled, add the kudampuli and curry leaves.<\/li>\n<li>Put the lid-on and cook the shrimp well (typically about 15 mts, but may vary depending on the type of shrimp you use).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tips:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Quantity of ingredients may vary individual taste.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">The consistency of the curry can adjust with the water quantity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">While frying the coconut may add some oil to avoid sticking on the pan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">While grinding the coconut, take the mixie out and stir the mix a spoon in-between, until you will get the smooth paste.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Proper care need to be given in the cooking time for this seafood since it will have a tough and rubbery texture when overcooked<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shrimp (Chemmen- \u0d1a\u0d46\u0d2e\u0d4d\u0d2e\u0d40\u0d7b\/\u0d15\u0d4a\u0d1e\u0d4d\u0d1a\u0d4d) is an excellent and popular choice for a tasty seafood dish.
