idli podi a very popular preservable side dish to accompany south Indian breakfast, idli. … This flavorful spice powder is made of channa dal, urad dal and sesame seeds is an excellent side dish for Idli and Dosa, when mixed with raw-oil typically sesame/gingely oil.

Ingredients

  1. Urud dal : ½ Cup
  2. Channa dal “ ½  Cup
  3. Sesame seeds : 3 Tbl-sp
  4. Pepper cone : 1 T-sp
  5. Curry leaves(dried) :  2 sprigs
  6. Dried red chilli : 20 (adjust)
  7. Oil : 1 T-sp
  8. Hing (asfoetida) : ¼ Inch-piece
  9. Salt for taste

Method

  • Heat ½ T-sp of oil in a pan and roast the channa-dal along with urud-dal and hing piece; roast it until the dals are golden brown in color. Take this out and keep it aside.
  • Heat the rest of the oil and roast the red chillies; keep it aside.
  • Dry roast the pepercones, sesame seeds and curry leaves separately; and keep all aside.
  • Allow all to cool completely.
  • Grind everything together and make a fine powder.
  • Add salt and mix all together.
  • Keep it an airtight container.

Tips:

  • For serving mix the powder with enough oil/ghee (usually use sesame /gingely oil) and enjoy with doas/idli.
  • Use always dry spoon for taking the powder.
  • Adjust the chilli quantity for your taste.
