Please don’t confuse the name with the art form Thiruvathira !!… Thiruvathira Kali or Kari is a naivedhyam item (offering food to god), prepared on Thiruvathira star, in the month of Dhanu. We used to make this back home in that special auspicious day of Lord Siva. This was one of the dishes for devotees who take thiruvathira fasting (vritha) on that day. The recipe is of fried and coarse ground rice mixed with jaggery, made in soft dry form.
Ingredients
- Raw rice : 1 cup
- Jaggery : 1 cup
- Water : 2 cup
- Grated coconut : 1C
- Cardamom : 2
- Ghee : 3 T sp.
- Cashews
- Almonds
- Raisins
Method
- Dry roast the rice along with cardamom until the rice becomes golden brown, in medium flame.
- Grind the rice in a mixer , it should be ground like semolina(rava).
- Boil the water in a pan and add the Jaggery.
- Once the jaggery dissolves completely, filter it for removing the residue.
- Heat a pan and pour the Jaggery syrup, once it boiled add the rice mixture along with the coconut.
- Stir well to avoid lumps and keep on stirring until the Kali becomes soft and the water evaporates.
- Add 1 Tsp ghee and stir it well.
- In another pan, fry the nuts and raisins with ghee and add the same to the Kali and stir everything together again.
- Remove the pan from the stove and the Thiruvathira kali is ready to serve.
